Chapter
Thirteen
It was four oâclock in the afternoon and Kasper Stroeve was standing in the lounge of an elderly lady called Esme Hodgkinson. Esme enlisted the services of a mobile hairdresser every couple of weeks and was always glad of the company.
Kasper in turn, appreciated the time to get out into the fresh air and away from the salon and was always glad of the strongly brewed tea and decent biscuits. As he worked, Kasper and Esme engaged in small talk, the kind of chat that occured between people that had known each other for a while.
Before long, Esmeâs hair was washed, trimmed and in curlers which allowed Kasper the opportunity to sit down and drink his well earned brew.
The lounge was furnished conservatively and had quite a cosy atmosphere. Adorning the large mantlepiece that stood in the centre of the room were a series of photos of Esmeâs deceased husband and a vase full of flowers. A large bay window faced out into the street and a moth-eaten armchair was placed just in front of it. It was obvious to Kasper that Esme spent most of her time in this chair, watching the outside world.
Kasper and Esme continued their small talk as they enjoyed their tea and biscuits. Esme regaled Kasper with stories concerning her exploits with her late husband. Esme was at the age where being embarrassed was beyond her and she tended to offer quite fruity descriptions of their time together. Kasper was not at that age and felt his face burning red on more than one occasion.
âSuch a shame about that poor Mr Carneyâ said Esme abruptly in a melancholic voice. âIâll miss him saying hello, with that twinkle in his eyeâ
Kasper was confused. âWere you a fan of his show then?â
âOh no, dearâ remarked Esme. âDonât watch TV that muchâ.
Esme could sense Kasperâs confusion and clarified her comment. âHe used to visit next door, every week or soâ.
Kasperâs eyes widened with shock. âWho was he visiting?â
âMr Dusk. Lovely man. Used to be a singer, I hearâ said Esme in a matter of fact tone of voice, before continuing to sip her earl grey tea.
âSo, Jared Dusk did know Garrett before filmingâ said Waverley excitedly, sitting bolt upright on the small sofa in her lounge. Kasper and Barrington had visited Waverley with Brigitta in tow, desperate to tell her about their newly acquired information and to pin their discovery on to the investigation wall in Waverleyâs flat.
âMrs Thompson told me that, a few weeks ago, sheâd heard Jared arguing furiously with someone and not long after had seen Garrett Carney storm out of the houseâ said Kasper excitedly.
âDid she hear what they were arguing about?â enquired Waverley curiously.
âNot really, It was through a wall, and she wears a hearing aidâ said Kasper sighing âBut she did say that she heard Garrett threaten Jared and say something like âIâll make you payâ.
Brigitta stood up quickly and defiantly, jolting Waverley in the process, and for some reason, causing the words âI am Spartacusâ! to appear in her head.
